A tissue and cell bank could become operational this fall in Romania’s central city of Targu Mures, Ovidiu Butuc, manager of the local emergency hospital, told a news conference Monday.

Butuc said similar banks are to be opened, with funds from the World Bank, in capital city Bucharest, in Iasi (eastern Romania) and in Timisoara (western Romania).

A representative of the National Transplant Agency has inspected three possible locations for the bank, and a World Bank expert will inspect the locations in about one month, Butuc added.

"I hope the bank will be functional by fall and that we’ll be able to provide tissue and cells to those who need them,” Butuc said.

He couldn’t state the value of the investment, but said things could move fast as spaces and trained personnel are available, and all that is missing is the specific equipment, such as nitrogen-based refrigerators.
