The fee will be lowered to 7.23 lei (EUR1=RON3.6475) for large or urgent payments Romanian banks make via the ReGIS system, from the current RON8.03, the central bank said in a statement.

The central bank added the lowering of fees within the electronic payment system would lead to changes in commercial lenders’ policies for payment and clearing services, which would help boost non-cash payment activities in Romania.

The central bank also said it would continue to lower fees for lenders within the ReGIS system, to bring them closer to the levels practiced by central banks members of the European System of Central Banks.

Before the ReGIS system became operational in April 2005, the fee stood at RON30, and was lowered 15% in April 2007.
