New Pricing Of Natural Gas Obscure To Most Romanians – PM

Romania’s new natural gas pricing system, enforced on July 1, is not as easy to understand as the old system, and market operators need to be well prepared to implement it, Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu said Wednesday.

“In my opinion of citizen and prime minister, the pricing method is not very accessible to someone without knowledge in the field,” Tariceanu said in a press conference.

Asked if he requested the energy watchdog ANRE to see if market operators are prepared to use the new pricing method, Tariceanu replied it is companies’ job to do that.

Tariceanu said the new pricing method of natural gas should have been implemented on January 1, but that it was delayed as gas distributors lacked necessary billing equipment.

On July 1, Romania’s energy watchdog introduced a new pricing method of natural gas, which takes into account both the gas consumed and the gas’ caloric power as quality constant.

Gas bills will still include information on gas consumption expressed in cubic meters, but the bill’s value will be computed based on the quantity of energy delivered to each consumer. The energy quantity is established through multiplication of gas consumption by the highest caloric power.

Implementation costs of the new pricing system will be paid by distributors and will not change the price paid by consumers.
