On long term, Tariceanu proposed a gradual increase by RON100 each year as of 2009.

"Given that gas prices rose in July and we are expecting inflationary shocks, I propose a minimum wage hike to RON540 as of October 1," Tariceanu told unionists during a meeting.

In May, the net average wage stood at RON1,248, down from 1,214 in the previous month. On a year-on-year basis, the net average wage rose by 13.7% in real terms.

Economy and Finance Minister Varujan Vosganian said Wednesday the net average wage is seen reaching RON1,325 in 2014.
