Romanian President Traian Basescu, together with his wife Maria on Sunday attended a religious ceremony performed at the new building of Romanian Orthodox Bishopry in Italy, near Rome.

The presidential couple were welcomed by Father Augustin and by some 500 Romanians present at the event.

Basescu is on a three-day visit to Italy. The Romanian head of state had talks on Friday with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on the conflict in Georgia and the situation of Romanians living in Italy.

On Saturday, Basescu met with Pope Benedict XVI, as well as with the Vatican’s top diplomat, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone and His Highness Matthew Festing, Prince and Grand Master of the Order of Malta.
