Romania’s Romtelecom Wins Bid For Mobile Telecom License

Romanian telecom operator Romtelecom, majority owned by Greece’s OTE, won the auction for a national mobile communication license, Romania’s communication and information technology regulator ANRCTI said Monday.

Other bidders for the national license for the use of radio frequencies 410-415/420-425 MHz to provide data network and mobile communication services were NetPoint (controlled by telecom and cable operator RCS&RDS), Saudi Oger (shareholder of Telemobil, which operates the Zapp Mobile network) and Tactical Networks AS, a Czech investment fund backed by Chinese telecom equipment maker ZTE.

The regulator said the bid submitted by Romtelecom, a former hard-line state monopoly, scored 86.21 points, followed by the consortia Saudi Oger Ltd and Radiomovel Telecomunicacoes – 75.75 points and Tactical Network AS, state-owned postal company Posta Romana and Euroweb Romania – 43.07 points.

The holder of the license will pay the equivalent in lei of EUR1,077,228 and will also pay an annual fee to the regulator for the use of frequencies, in compliance with Romanian telecom laws.

The Romanian mobile communication market is operated by Orange Romania, Vodafone Romania, Cosmote Romania, RCS&RDS (Digi.Mobil) and Telemobil (Zapp Mobile).
