According to Constanta county police spokesman Radu Croitoru, on Tuesday night, Marian Constantin (14), accompanied by Vasile Aratoaiei (18), broke into the home of Niculina Deacu (68), in Constanta commune Ion Corvin, with the intention of robbing the place.

The two, wearing home-made ski masks, were caught in the act by the woman and fled without stealing anything. However, they went into the neighboring home, owned by Leonora Culea (75), whom they immobilized and gagged with duct tape. The two suspects then stole the woman’s cell pone, a tape recorder and her wedding ring.

Meanwhile, Niculina Deacu called 112, and the local chief of police soon arrived on the scene and began chasing the two suspects, helped by the woman’s neighbors. The suspects were warned by the police officer to stop running, but they failed to comply, which determined the officer to use his firearm, firing one warning shot and four shots towards the suspects.

Marian Constantin was injured several times in the right leg, right buttock and on the left thigh. He was taken to the County Emergency Clinic, where he received medical assistance and is now recovering.

The second suspect, Vasile Aratoaiei, local animal tender, was soon identified and arrested. He had the ring stolen off Leonora Culea’s finger in his pocket.

The Constanta County Police organized a task force led by a prosecutor within the Constanta Court, which will continue investigations in this case. In addition, the team will also establish if the police officer made legal use of his firearm.
