The fire started in a passenger car where there were only three teenagers, aged 17 and 18, who managed to get out in a timely fashion, said Salaj county Inspectorate for Emergency Situations spokesman Andrei Crisan.

The car that caught fire was uncoupled from the rest of the train and pulled from traffic when the blaze was put out. The train continued on route.

Carmen Copanaru, from the railroad company’s press office, said the incident occurred around 06.50 local time, and most travelers on the train were commuters.

The causes for the fire are yet unknown but the Ministry of Transport issued a press release stating that a special commission was appointed to investigate the matter.

One of the three teenagers who were in the train car pulled the alarm signal because he got frightened of the thick smoke. The three teenagers were kept at the Ip train station to make statements. The statements will be used by the investigation commission.
