At press time the bodies were transported to the morgue.

According to the prefecture, the miners brought up are Elekes Attila, Dan Mates, Nicolae Puian and Daniel Fratile.

Pricajan said the operation, unfolded by nine rescuers around 13:45 local time, took “three-four” hours, and the lives of the rescuers were not endangered throughout the action.

He added the bodies of the other four miners will be brought up “as soon as possible,” depending on the results of underground atmosphere testing and the intervention plan made by the committee working on the situation.

Another team of rescuers went in the mine to perform some tests, around 14:20, but they did not get near the area where the blasts occurred.

Mine rescuers, miners and “members of the management” are being questioned Monday within the investigation at the mine in Petrila, Hunedoara county, western Romania, where two blasts claimed twelve lives Saturday.

Sources close to the investigation said investigations are underway, with the hearings of miners, rescuers and members of management, without specifying whether they were part of the Petrila mine management or the management of the national pitcoal company CNH.

The head of the local labor inspectorate, Ileana Bodea, said Sunday hundreds of people would be brought in for hearings over the next days within the investigation.

A powerful blast killed eight miners Saturday and a second blast claimed the lives of four others, who had entered the mine for rescue operations. Another 14 people were injured.

Eight of the injured were brought to Bucharest Sunday morning and are in serious condition. The other six are still committed to the local hospital in Petrosani.
