Romanian Authorities Cancel Auction To Sell Offices In Bucharest Free Press House

Romania’s state protocol authority, or RA-APPS, said Friday it cancelled the public auctions to sell spaces in the Free Press House in Bucharest scheduled for November 26-28.

The authority had initiated the auction procedure to sell 15 offices in the building for starting prices ranging between EUR31,000 and EUR86,000, VAT not included.

The Romanian Press Club protested Wednesday to the fact that the authority was selling office spaces in the building “at ridiculously high prices” without consulting or even informing the Club, despite promises made in this respect by governments of the past eight years.

"The Romanian Press Club considers there is no ground for the building to keep its name of ‘Free Press House’ considering that several spaces are filled by institutions that have nothing to do with the media (the Romanian Commodities Exchange, the Competition Council) and the fact that authorities intend to sell the spaces to whomever can afford to buy them,” the press club said in a statement.
