Turnout in rural areas was 40.06% and in urban areas it stood at 30.43% by GMT 1600, Muhulet said.
The Central Election Office also said turnout was higher than the national average in 24 counties out of the country’s 41, and the highest turnout was recorded in counties Teleorman (47.06%), Vrancea (43.16%), Giurgiu (42.05%), Ilfov ( 41.72%) and Neamt (41.31%).
The lowest turnout was recorded in counties Timis (26.50%), Covasna (28.27%), Sibiu (29.54%) Arad (30.07%) and Brasov (30.64%).
