At the moment, most dealers have Euro 4 cars with engines over 2,000 cc. Some of the car makers, such as Audi and BMW, are present with models using high cylinder capacity engines that comply with Euro 4 norms as well as with Euro 5 restrictions.
Starting December 15, for a new Audi Q7 with a 4.2 liter engine the tax will reach EUR11,000, while for the same car fitted with a 3 liter diesel engine with particle filter the tax will reach EUR4,800.
For a new Mercedes Benz C 200 CDI with a Euro 4, 2,148 cc diesel engine, the tripled value will reach some EUR2,800. The buyer of a new Opel Vectra with a 2.2 liter gasoline engine will pay a tax of approximately EUR3,000.
The buyers of new Euro 4 cars with cylinder capacities below 2,000 cc will be exempt from paying the tax between December 15, 2008 and December 31, 2009, according to the Government Ordinance.
Starting with October 1, 2009, cars sold in the European Union need to observe the Euro 5 pollution norms. Thus, when the tax suspension interval expires, the only cars allowed to be sold will be Euro 5 models.
