Over 6,000 People Attend Rally Of Romanian Carmaker Dacia Employees

The leader of the National Union Bloc (BNS), Dumitru Costin, told protesters that he spoke to economy minister Adriean Videanu about the situation at Dacia, and the minister promised his support.

Automobile Dacia union vice-president Ion Iordache, said Dacia employees “don’t want bread and circus, just bread".

"We’ve come to import all sorts of products, we’re importing matches, and all these imports are to the detriment of local products and this leads to the scrapping of jobs. It’s the same with cars and if the Government allows a tax that encourages car imports, we might all be put out of a job. Don’t let yourselves be manipulated and stick together,” Iordache told protesters.

Dacia resumed activity Monday morning after a one month production halt, but announced only a few hours later that production will be halted again, for two weeks, between Jan 26 and Feb 8.

The carmaker said in a press release that employees put on technical unemployment will receive 85% of their gross salaries.
