"By doubling the number of troops in ISAF, Romania has met its responsibilities in terms of security and will increase involvement in civilian operations,” the head of state said.

According to Basescu, success in Afghanistan will only be possible with the long term involvement of the international community and speeding up the country’s reconstruction and development is crucial.

The president also spoke about the situation in Iraq, where, in his opinion, the efforts of the international community in the field of domestic security and reconstruction are starting to show.

"Romania’s commitment in Iraq continues, at the request of the Iraqi government,” Basescu said.

Romanian troops will ensure humanitarian and medical relief in Tallil and Baghdad and will train Iraqi security forces, the Romanian High Council for National Defense, or CSAT, said in a press release after its meeting Tuesday.
