On Tuesday, Saftoiu accused Basescu in a TV show of resorting to illegal tapping to have access to political talks between two prominent social democrat figures.

According to Saftoiu, the head of state had access, over the years, to private talks between social democrat leader Mircea Geoana and the party’s honorary president Ion Iliescu, stressing Basescu would personally fill him in on these talks.

Iliescu said he does not suspect Basescu of listening to illegal phone tapping.
