The Romanian Government decided Thursday to reduce by 20% the number of positions in the central public administration, representing ministries and government agencies, but the decision does not touch on the employees in the entire public sector, official sources said.

Romanian prime minister Emil Boc and finance minister Gheorghe Pogea recently said the sum of public administration staff spending will be gradually reduced by up to 20% compared to 2008, through the removal from budgeting of some 139,500 vacant positions from central and local public institutions existing on December 31, 2008.
