Romanian Railroad Unionists Want RON600 Minimum Wage

Unionists from Romanian National Railroad Company CFR request the allocation of at least 500 million lei (EUR1 = RON4.2390) for infrastructure, the application of the RON600 minimum wage and the maintaining of jobs in the railway sector, union leader Gheorghe Popa told MEDIAFAX.

The leader of the Miscare-Comercial Federation said that in the meeting to be held Thursday with the representatives of the Ministry of Transport to negotiate a new labor contract, the union will request job protection and minimum wage for railroad workers as well.

"Starting with January 1, if the minimum wage on economy becomes RON600 on a national level, we want this salary to be imposed within CFR as well, as it is currently at RON540," Popa said.

The union leader added the CFR unionists have not yet received any calendar for restructuring or layoffs within CFR and said such a measure would be impossible in the traffic area.

Popa said the railroad infrastructure needs to receive at least RON500 million from the 2009 budget, otherwise railroad activity cannot continue and CFR Infrastructura could even go bankrupt.

Deputy secretary of state within the Ministry of Transport, Constantin Axinia, will meet Thursday with railroad unions to discuss salary matters, given that the collective labor contract expires on January 31.
