Pensions in Romania’s state pension system will be increased 5% in 2009, in two tranches: 3% in April and 2% in October, taking the pension point to 42 - 45% of the average gross wage, people close to the talks within the governing coalition told MEDIAFAX Thursday.

They said the minimum pension will reach 300 lei (EUR1=RON4.2314) in April and RON400 in October.

Labor minister Marian Sarbu repeatedly spoke about the need for a minimum guaranteed state pension of RON350.

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Tuesday on public radio that he wouldn’t object if the government decided to freeze pensions and wages for six months to boost the economy, if the government reaches an agreement with unions in this respect.

Social democrats, part of the governing coalition, said they would oppose such a move and union leaders suggested Wednesday evening after talks with the president that such a measure would not be taken.
