Italian Police Keeps Romanian Rape Suspects In Protective Custody

The six Romanians arrested after the rape committed on a 21-year old Italian girl in the outskirts of Rome, are kept in isolation because they are under the threat of violence from the Italian inmates, while their state-provided lawyers refused to defend them for fear of retaliation.

According to Italian daily Il Mattino, the four Romanians suspected of having committed the rape – Mirel Huma, Marcel Cristinel Coada, as well as the brothers Lucian and Ciprian Trinca – admitted their guilt, but one of the suspects, charged with having aided the act, denies involvement.

The rape took place on January 22 in an isolated area in Guidonia, a suburb in the eastern outskirts of Rome.

Based on the dispute created in Italy and the violence against Romanian stores, authorities decided to keep the six Romanians in separate cells, to prevent the possibility of violence from the Italian inmates.

In addition, the six state-appointed lawyers refused to offer legal protection to the suspects, in likely fear of violence from the population.
