Romania’s Chamber Of Deputies OKs Its ’09 Budget

Romania’s Chamber of Deputies approved Wednesday, with 134 votes in favor, 3 votes against and 3 abstentions this year’s draft budget for the Chamber, but liberals said they will contest the vote citing lack of quorum.

The budget of the Chamber of Deputies amounts to 301 million lei (EUR1=RON4.2971), up 22.1% from last year.

Head of the Chamber of Deputies, Roberta Anastase, said in the plenary session that representatives of the National Liberal Party did not attend the vote.

Eugen Nicolaescu, vice-president of the liberal lawmakers’ group, said the vote was illegal, as only 153 deputies were present, from the minimum 163 stipulated by the Chamber’s Regulation.

“We left the room,” Nicolaescu said, adding the Liberal Party will file litigation at the Standing Office against the voting in the Chamber of Deputies on the 2009 draft budget.
