The pollution tax for cars was lowered by one third by means of an emergency decree the government adopted Wednesday.
The tax is now double compared to July 2008.
Prime Minister Emil Boc said the tax becomes effective when the decree is published in the country’s Official Journal.
The decree, published Thursday, sets that owners who haven’t yet registered their imported second hand cars bought before Dec 15, 2008, when the tax was tripled, have 20 calendar days to submit the papers needed to allow them to pay the tax its value before Dec 15.
Car owners who paid the tripled tax may require a refund of the tax difference.
The tax refund procedure will be regulated by order of the minister of environment and the minister of public finance within 30 days of publication of the emergency decree.
People who bought cars to be registered in Romania after Dec 15 and who paid the tax by Feb 19 will not benefit from the reduction of the tax.
