Romania could hold presidential elections before Dec 15 this year, when the president’s five-year term expires, and the head of state can be invested by Parliament afterward, Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said late Saturday.

Boc, who is also the leader of the Democratic Liberal Party, added the party supports current president Traian Basescu for a second term.
"Elections can be held before December 15 and the new president can be sworn in by Parliament after Dec 15, when the five-year presidential term expires. I don’t see any constitutional problem why we couldn’t hold elections before Dec 15,” Boc said.

He added the matter was not discussed by the government or the Democratic Liberal Party, but the Constitution allows it.

Boc said the party supports Basescu for a second term and Boc himself doesn’t plan to run for president.

"The candidate the party backs is Traian Basescu,” Boc said.
