The local traffic police department in the central Romanian city of Sibiu said Thursday it will organize an amateur car racing contest to celebrate the National Police Day, in a bid to discourage illegal car races on the city’s streets.

The contest will take place on the old runway of the city airport on March 21 and will be part of a series of events celebrating National Police Day, which is on March 25.

The race will be organized in partnership with an association that will handle the sporting aspect of the contest.

"The idea for such a contest started from the fact that, one way or another, we need to put an end to illegal car races that take place at night on the city streets or in large parking lots and we thought we could offer amateur racers a way to get their adrenalin fix legally,” the local police said in a press release.

The competition is open to all amateurs for a RON100 enrollment fee and the rules will be made public shortly.
