Incest Between Consenting Adults No Longer Criminal Act Under Romania’s New Criminal Code

Professor Valerian Cioclei, one of the specialists who worked on developing the new Romanian Criminal Code, explained that incest between consenting adults will no longer be a crime, but that the punishment for the incestuous abuse of minors will be harsher.

Cioclei argued that incest between consenting adults, although immoral, should not be penalized legally, as it prevents those persons from seeking professional counsel. On the other hand, incestuous rape and incestuous intercourse with a minor are still criminal acts and will be punished severely.
 
On Wednesday, the Romanian Government approved the new draft Civil Code, after approving, last week, the Criminal Code, the Criminal Procedure Code and the Civil Procedure Code.
 
The documents have been sent to Parliament, and the Government is committed to get them approved by May.
