Gelu Drajneanu Appointed Interim Head Of Interior Ministry Intelligence Dept

Gelu Drajneanu was appointed interim head of the Romanian Interior Ministry’s General Intelligence and Internal Protection Department (DGIPI) Wednesday, after the department’s chief Cornel Serban was detained by anticorruption prosecutors Tuesday night.

Drajneanu is a former deputy general inspector of the Romanian Police Force.
 
Serban, along Petre Pitcovici, head of the Operations Division within the General Anticorruption Department, businessman Puiu Popoviciu and Ioan Alecu, former rector of the University of Agronomic Science and Veterinary Medicine were detained by anticorruption prosecutors Tuesday night.
 
According to a press release issued Wednesday by the National Anticorruption Department (DNA), Serban is accused of aiding a criminal, using and allowing access of unauthorized persons to private information.
 
Interior minister Dan Nica plans to disband the General Intelligence and Internal Protection Department and fully restructure the General Anticorruption Department (DGA), according to sources within the ministry.
