"The price increase reflects the impact of the higher excise. The excise hike is transferred onto consumers,” Adrian Popa, corporate & regulatory affairs manager of cigarette producer British American Tobacco Romania, told MEDIAFAX Friday.

The government approved the emergency decree hiking excises on tobacco and alcohol Wednesday.

Excise duties on tobacco products will be further increased to EUR64 per 1,000 cigarettes as of September 1.

For instance, a pack of premium cigarettes (Kent, Marlboro, Camel) will cost RON7.2 as of April from the current RON6.8.

The most recent cigarette price hike was operated early March, when the price for a cigarette pack increased by RON0.3.

British American Tobacco, Philip Morris International and Japan Tobacco International control over 95% of the Romanian tobacco market.
