Death Toll Among Romanians In Italy Quake Rises To 5 – FM

Italian authorities confirmed Tuesday that another Romanian citizen was killed in the recent earthquake that shook L’Aquila, 100 km northeast of Rome, rising the death toll among Romanians to five, the Romanian Foreign Ministry said.

"Italian authorities confirmed the death of a minor who is a Romanian citizen. The number of Romanians killed in the earthquake in Italy is of five so far,” the ministry said.

The death toll is expected to rise, as rescue crews keep finding victims under the debris.

The Romanian Embassy to Rome is in close contact with local authorities and will notify the ministry immediately if there is any new information regarding Romanians.

The ministry added that, as soon as rescue operations have been completed and Italian authorities have authorized the transfer of victims’ bodies to Romania, the Embassy would provide assistance as much as possible.  

The ministry also launched an appeal to Romanians that are in dangers or know fellow Romanians who might be, to contact Romanian diplomatic missions in Italy by calling the embassy’s emergency number 0039 345 230 24 89.
