Nemirschi said the tax would follow the principle “polluters pay”, which is valid “for every single exhaust pipe”.
"I may be feeling fine today in a car that causes a lot of smoke, but then again, are my children and grandchildren obliged to deal with the consequences? Global warming is real,” the minister said.
He explained the new tax would be introduced as of 2010 and would be gradual, depending on carbon dioxide emissions. He added a legislative proposal in this respect is barely sketched and the ministry is in talks with officials of Romania’s Association of Car Manufacturers and Importers.
As of Feb 19, 2009, Romania’s car is a third lower than the tax valid between December 15, 2008 and February 19, 2009, but double the tax valid between July 1 and December 15, 2008.
