Romanian Deputies Adopt Decree Hiking Clergy Wages

Romania’s Chamber of Deputies adopted Wednesday with 201 pros, one con and one abstention, the government decree hiking the wages of the clergy, to 65% of teachers’ base salary and to 75% for priests serving in churches with scarce funding.

Social democrat lawmaker Victor Surdu said the law is one of the best things the Parliament could do for this sector.
 
Deputies actually debated a decree issued by the country’s former liberal government, which stipulates the state would set the wages of church staff to 65% of teachers’ base salary and 75% for priests serving in churches with scarce funding.
 
The Chamber has the final say on the matter.
