The MEPs expressed their solidarity with Romanian foreign affairs minister Cristian Diaconescu who had come to offer an analysis on the situation within an extraordinary reunion of the EP Commission for Foreign Affairs and the delegation for relations with Moldova.

Cristian Diaconescu dubbed "absolutely unfounded" and "absurd" the accusations issued by Moldovan president Vladimir Voronin regarding Romania’s involvement in the protests at Chisinau.

Romania remained "very moderate" in this crisis, Diaconescu said. Moreover, Romania remains open to close relations with Moldova, according to Diaconescu, despite the introduction of traveling visas for Romanian citizens, the arrest and expulsion of 24 Romanian journalists.

"These measures should be condemned on an EU level,” the head of Romanian diplomacy insisted.
