Romanians Abroad To Be Able To Vote In EP Elections

Romanian citizens will be able to vote in the European Parliament elections even if they are temporarily abroad, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, adding procedures have been initiated for the organization of EP Elections, as well as the voting information campaigns for Romanian citizens abroad.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs that, according to legislation on the organization and functioning of elections for the European Parliament, Romanian citizens abroad who wish to vote in the EP elections on June 7, 2009 will be able to do so even if they are temporarily abroad. Therefore, tourists will be able to vote," said a press release issued by the ministry Wednesday.

For the elections held on June 7, the ministry organizes polling stations within the diplomatic missions and consular offices in order to allow Romanian citizens abroad to cast their vote.

According to Law no. 33/2007 on the organization and functioning of the elections for European Parliament, Romanian citizens will be able to vote abroad using the following documents: identity card, provisional identity card, simple passport, simple electronic passport, simple temporary passport, diplomatic passport, electronic diplomatic passport, official passport, official electronic passport.

The information campaign targeting Romanian citizens abroad regarding the voting procedure will unfold in media and online, as well as through the diplomatic missions and the associative Romanian structures abroad.
