In January-February, Romania’s central bank BNR reported foreign direct investments (FDI) of EUR1.374 billion, up 38% compared with EUR995 million in the same period last year.
"We maintain our forecast of 4.5-5 billion euro foreign investments for this year, but if the first two months’ growth pace continues, the estimation may be exceeded," Vasilescu said.
According to him, since the beginning of the year, ARIS received 12 project plans from foreign investors, representing investments of over EUR700 million that might create 3,000 jobs.
In Romania, the foreign investors are interested mainly to invest in manufacturing equipments for alternative power sources, in the construction materials and IT sectors.
"Investors come from countries such as the USA, Italy, Germany or China. The largest investment project, of around EUR100 million, is in the power sector. We are now trying to attract investors especially in the industrial parks,” Vasilescu added.
Romania attracted a record EUR9.1 billion FDI in 2008, up 25% from EUR7.251 billion a year earlier.
