Romanian Social Democrat Head At Odds With President Over Adoption Of Legal Codes

Romania’s Social Democratic Party (PSD) president, Mircea Geoana, said Tuesday that president Traian Basescu’s accusations alleging he plans to boycott the adoption of the country’s legal codes are absurd, adding Basescu plans to lay all the blame on the Parliament and the social democrats.

Geoana said Basescu’s accusations alleging he plans to boycott the adoption of the country’s four legal codes until May 15, the deadline set at the presidential palace, are ungrounded and absurd.

Geoana stressed it is necessary to put the four codes up for more serious debate, adding the head of state actually wants to hold the Parliament and the social democrats responsible in case of failure with respect to the European Commission’s monitoring in the justice sector.

Geoana said on Monday that there is information which says European funds for Romania may be cut after the Commission’s Report on Justice this summer and urged Basescu and relevant institutions to take measures to avoid this risk.

Geoana said he calls on the head of state “as the main coordinator of institutions related to Justice in Romania of the last five years, to take every step necessary, through direct contact with the justice minister, prosecutor general, head of the Anticorruption Department, the heads of the High Council of Magistrates and the High Court of Justice and to take every required measure to prevent this massive risk to the interests and reputation of Romania in Europe.”

In turn, Basescu said Geoana’s statements are regrettable and purely electoral.
