Analyst: Romania’s Margineni Gas Storage Unit More Likely To Be Built, In Line With Russian Strategy

The construction of the gas storage facility in Margineni, eastern Romania, has now more chances to be realized than in the past, as the project is in line with Russia’s strategy of developing such units abroad, Wednesday said analyst Vladimir Socor during the Europe-Russia economic forum.

"Russia targets the construction of gas storage facilities west of Ukraine, and thus it started such talks with Hungary, Austria, Serbia, and now with Romania. The project in Margineni has a good chance to be built, on being in line with Russian policy," according to Socor, political analyst with US’ Foundation Jamestown.

Romania’s largest gas producer Romgaz and Russian Gazprom will set up a joint venture to build in Romania several natural gas storage facilities and thermal power plants, Economy Ministry Adriean Videanu said Tuesday.

He added that the joint venture will be equally owned by Romgaz and Gazprom.

Romgaz has planned for several years to build this facility but discussion with Russia have not reached a definite result by now.

Last week, Videanu met Gazprom’s representatives and Russia’s Ministers of Energy and Education in Moscow to analyze the development of the two countries’ collaboration projects within the energy field and the steps necessary to implement the respective projects.
