Romanian Govt OKs 15% Higher Guaranteed Min Income

Romania will increase by 15% the guaranteed minimum income starting with July, as part of a World Bank agreement to better protect underprivileged citizens during crisis, according to a government decision adopted Wednesday.

According to World Bank research, Romania’s guaranteed minimum income is currently at 18% of the minimum wage, way below the 29% guaranteed income in 2004.
 
The guaranteed minimum income in 2009 barely covers 35% of the basic needs of underprivileged categories.
 
Following the 15% increase, Romania’s monthly guaranteed minimum income will reach 125 lei (EUR1=RON4.1830) for singles, RON225 for families of two, RON313 for families of three, RON390 for families of four, RON462 for families of five and an additional RON31 for each person for families of over five.
