"Due to the events that have marked the post-electoral interval in the Republic of Moldova, the attendance of Romanian president Traian Basescu in the Summit for the Southeastern Europe Cooperation Process, confirmed in March, is no longer of actuality," said a press release issued by the Presidential Administration.
Romania’s representation in this summit, which will take place early June in Moldovan capital Chisinau, will be decided and announced at a later date, according to the quoted source.

Prior to this announcement, an official of the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, quoted by Info-Prim Neo online, announced that Romanian president Traian Basescu confirmed his attendance in the SEECP Summit in Chisinau, which will take on June 4 and 5.

The head of the regional cooperation department within the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dumitru Tara, said Basescu confirmed his presence in the summit, which could also include talks on Romanian-Moldovan relations, which have been tense lately.

The Summit will be presided over by the acting president of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin.

Following the protests on April 7 in Chisinau, Moldovan president Vladimir Voronin accused Romania of involvement in an attempted coup d’état. At the president’s request, the Romanian ambassador to Chisinau was expelled and visas were instated for Romanians wishing to travel to Moldova. Romanian president Traian Basescu rejected the accusations, stating the responsibility for the violence in Chisinau is held by the communist authorities there and asked the Romanian Government to simplify the Romanian citizenship granting procedure for Moldovans.
