The World Health Organization (WHO) has empowered Romania’s Cantacuzino Institute to confirm potential infections with the new H1N1 flu virus both nationally and for nine other states in the region, Romanian Health Minister Ion Bazac said Thursday.

The nine other states are Albania, Moldova, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Belarus, Bulgaria and Bosnia, Bazac said.

He said the tests at Cantacuzino Institute in Bucharest will be free of charge, same as the ones conducted at the lab in London.

So far, Romania has sent three samples to London for final confirmation regarding swine flu infection in three nationals.

A 30-year-old woman, her 14-month-old son and her father tested positive for H1N1 influenza.

The three are treated at the infectious disease hospital “Matei Bals” in Bucharest, which has been placed under special protective detail as stipulated in the Romanian pandemic strategy, Bazac said.

Bazac underscored Romania has not been placed under quarantine and no person ever will be forced to remain in hospital or to see a doctor every time they catch a cold.

However, people will be informed on the risks they take if they show flu-like symptoms and are late in seeing a doctor, Bazac mentioned.
