Romanian President: Judges Must Enforce The Law, Not Make It

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Friday, within the event commemorating 100 years since the inception of Romania's High Council of Magistrates (CSM), that judges must enforce the law, not create it, and stressed the separation of powers translates into mutual control.

Basescu also said in his speech that the Council guarantees the independence of magistrates, with respect to the other powers, not the law, stressing legality is another principle, which is as important as the independence of magistrates.

He wished good luck to the Council in its activity, adding the centennial highlights "Romania’s judicial tradition," considering Romania is one of the first European countries that set up such an institution.

Moreover, Basescu pointed out that, throughout 18 years since its re-establishment, the Council has managed to strengthen its position among the country’s fundamental institutions and has become one of the most important structures of the judicial authority.
