Police officers said over 300 pickpocketing cases were reported in May alone, compared with 179 cases in the same period in 2008.

Furthermore, police officers arrested three pickpockets in May this year, namely two Romanians and one Polish.

Finnish authorities said Romanians had been involved in 40 such incidents, which brought them some EUR40,000, stressing the group of Romanians also included a 17-year old teenager, usually working on his own, and a Romanian who allegedly stole some EUR10,000.

The members of the group were allegedly of Roma origin, but police officers stressed they have nothing to do with Romanian beggars on the streets of Helsinki.
