Basescu attended the ceremony instating the newly elected Romanian Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).

He told the dignitaries they have the extraordinary mission of being MEPs for 500 million Europeans and to synchronize their actions so that EP decisions are good for Romania as well.

"Correlation needs to function regardless of your specific groups,” Basescu said, adding this is the first generation of Romanian MEPs elected for a full mandate.

Later, Basescu expressed hope that the conduct of Romanian MEPs will not be subject to excessive political debates, adding the MEPs need to correlate with the national Parliament.

The head of state added all MEPs are Romanian, "even though they have their differences".

After the conclusion of Basescu’s speech, the guests in the ceremony toasted a glass of champagne.
