The Ministry issued these statements after Moldova’s incumbent President Vladimir Voronin urged Romanian authorities to stop issuing Romanian passports for Moldovan citizens.

The Ministry stressed Romanian passports can be issued for Romanian citizens only and also ruled out the possibility of having Romanian passports issued for Moldovan citizens who do not have Romanian citizenship.

Furthermore, the Ministry pointed out that "visas for Moldovan citizens are granted free of charge until Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area, set for March 2011."

The Ministry also highlighted that "visas granted by Romanian embassies and consulates are «visas with limited territorial validity», until Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area, which means that holders of this type of visas can travel only in Romania and no other EU member states.”

Voronin said Saturday, June 20, that an “iron curtain” with the European Union should be raised on Moldova’s border with Romania.

“The European Union should solve the question of liberalization of the visa regime with the Republic of Moldova as soon as possible,” Voronin said in an exclusive interview for Itar-Tass.

Voronin also said he was concerned with Romania’s plans to step up the issuance of Romanian passports to Moldovan citizens, as voiced out by Romanian President Traian Basescu
