Romanian central bank governor Mugur Isarescu said Wednesday he personally disagrees with an increase in any of the major taxes, and even with talks on this issue, which confuses people and the market even more.

"In such moments, even discussing such an idea seems inappropriate. We only manage to bring more confusion to a discouraged society and economy. (…) Under the current circumstances, no major tax hike is justified," Isarescu stated.

The governor explained that a higher tax would not trigger higher revenues, but on the contrary it would have a negative impact on tax collections.

In recent weeks, media reported that authorities might consider hiking the flat tax, currently at 16%, and/or the value added tax, which stands at 19%.

Late Tuesday, Romania’s Finance Minister Gheorghe Pogea said, however, the government does not currently plan to hike the flat tax or the VAT.
