The spokesman’s statement was made after the meeting between Romanian president Traian Basescu and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies within the Czech Parliament.
"(Traian Basescu) supports the accession of former communist states to the European Union, but this needs to be based on the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty," the spokesman said.
Basescu arrived Wednesday morning in Prague, for the official two-day visit to the Czech Republic, and was welcomed by Czech counterpart Vaclav Klaus.
Basescu said Wednesday morning, before leaving for an official two-day visit to the Czech Republic, that issues to be discussed include bilateral cooperation of the two countries, the evaluation of the Czech presidency of the European Union, the situation in Western Balkans and EU enlargement, the situation in the Republic of Moldova, the effects of the economic crisis in the EU and potential measures that should be taken at the next European Council.
