Romania Transp Min Owes RON90M To Bucharest-Ploiesti Highway Constructors

Romania’s Transport Ministry owes 90 million lei (EUR1-RON4.2378) to companies handling the construction of the Bucharest-Ploiesti motorway, after the Court of Accounts decided to suspend payments due to a series of irregularities, minister Radu Berceanu said.

“Although the works at the Bucharest-Ploiesti are on, we ceased making the payments, because of a matter identified by the Court of Accounts in last year’s activity. We are working to correct those errors and we will pay the overdue RON90 million in the following period, so that the construction will not be interrupted,” Berceanu told a press conference.

Once the debt is paid, the ministry would have depleted the funds allocated to the motorway construction, Berceanu mentioned. He said the ministry is searching new solution to ensure financing until the end of the year.

Berceanu also announced he is to meet on July 23 with officials of the U.S. constructor Bechtel to discuss the situation of the Suplacu de Barcau-Bors segment of the Transylvania Motorway.
