Romanian Govt Pledges RON170M For The Judiciary In ‘09

Romanian President Traian Basescu on Tuesday said the executive pledged to allocate 170 million lei (EUR1-RON4.2012) for the judiciary in 2009, urging the magistrates not to endanger the right to justice of citizens following their protests.

The representatives of the legislative and executive powers in Romania held a meeting at the presidential Cotroceni Palace regarding the financial situation in the justice system.
 
"Romanian President Traian Basescu on Tuesday mediated talks between legal system representatives and government officials, at the request of the head of the High Council of Magistrates and the justice minister, and talks focused on core issues for the country’s legal system," the presidency said a in a press release.
 
The talks focused on the magistrates’ decision to suspend activity for three hours daily, following an order of the justice minister annulling a 50% bonus for neuropsychological exhaustion.
 
Basescu asked the magistrates that their protests do not affect the courts’ activity.
 
In addition, Basescu agreed to mediate a new meeting between the parties on August 4, the presidency said.
