The train engine is the first of three such engines the railway company plans to buy under a frame agreement for RON28.18 million, to be paid from the state budget.

With its European Union entry on January 1, 2007, Romania must ensure a minim speed of 160 km/hour for passenger trains and 120 km/hour for freight trains traveling on pan-European transport corridors IV and IX.

The railway company’s most recent data indicates the deadline for capital repairs on 38% of the railway network has been exceeded, and nearly 11,000 railway bridges and 90% of fixed installations are in the same poor state, which has led to a large number of speed restraints.

Romania has a single track that allows speeds of 200 km/hour at a railway testing center.

Softronic was founded in 1991 and is based in Craiova, southern Romania specializes in train engine maintenance and repair and sells high voltage and energy measurement electrical devices.

The company has four individual shareholders and had a turnover of RON42.97 million in 2008, up 12% from the previous year, when it posted a turnover of RON48.84 million.
