Romanian MEP Gigi Becali Announces Presidential Candidacy

Romanian MEP Gigi Becali, head of the Christian-Democratic New Generation Party (PNG-CD), on Saturday announced his candidacy for the presidency of Romania within the party’s national council meeting.

Becali stressed he sees social democrat head Mircea Geoana as his main rival in the presidential race.
Becali quit PNG-CD after the parliamentary elections in 2008, but was re-elected head of the party on July 18, 2009.
The controversial businessman turned politician secured a seat in the European Parliament at the elections on June 7, 2009 when he ran on behalf of the nationalistic Greater Romania Party (PRM).
Romania holds the first round of presidential elections on November 22 and a second round on December 6.
