Romanian President Traian Basescu Announces Candidacy For Second Term

Romania’s acting President Traian Basescu on Saturday announced his candidacy for a second term in Sannicolau Mare, in Romanian western county of Timis, where he met with farmers in the country’s western region.

„Many people keep asking me a lot of questions and I know you also have a few questions for me. You probably wonder if I will run for a second term. I am telling you now that I will run for a second term as president,” Basescu said.

The head of state stressed he never thought he would announce his candidacy for re-election in Sannicolau Mare, adding, however, that he is convinced he did the right thing.
Nearly two thousand people, both farmers and locals, attended the meeting in Sannicolau Mare and hailed Basescu’s speech.
Basescu said repeatedly in recent months that he has not decided whether or not he would run for a second term as president. At one time, he said his candidacy depends on how the effects of the crisis in Romania evolve.
Romania holds the first round of presidential elections on November 22 and a second round on December 6.
