Romanian PM Accuses Opposition Of Dodging IMF-Required Pension Bill

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc accused Tuesday opposition liberals and social democrats of submitting a no-confidence motion to dodge the IMF-required pension reform, which lowers pensions for lawmakers and for which the government plans to seek a confidence vote in Parliament.

Boc also cited an opinion poll saying 81% of Romanians want public pensions to be calculated based on social security contributions, adding the opposition’s no-confidence motion is thus directed at 81% of Romanians.

The prime minister reminded of the government’s decisions to cut back on state agencies and lower public spending, adding he expected a responsible and courageous stand from the opposition.

„You’ve shunned away and came up with yet another procedure to dodge this law that cuts your privileges,” Boc told the opposition during debates on the no-confidence motion.

Romanian lawmakers met in plenary session Tuesday to debate and vote on a no-confidence motion submitted by the opposition last week, seeking to overthrow the country’s minority government less than two months ahead of presidential elections due on November 22.

The motion was initiated by 123 lawmakers of the Liberal, Hungarian minority and Social Democratic parties.

The motion needs 236 votes to pass, and the meeting is attended by 432 out of 471 lawmakers. The opposition has a total 279 lawmakers.
