„I strongly believe we should set up in Romania a true national energy champion. There are talks on setting up either two or one holdings. I believe in one holding (…) Romania must have the courage to say we could establish one company, an integrated holding, a powerful, capitalized player which starts to be active on the regional market,” Geoana said at a debate organized by Forum Invest.
Social democrat deputy Iulian Iancu added the holding would be similar with the former national electricity company Conel set up in 1998 and dissolved in 2000, which only included energy producers and distributors, and excluded gas companies.
Geoana said he is launching this topic for public debate and experts, politicians, the future Government as well as the Parliament should decide whether this is a good thing.
He added state-run companies Romgaz and Transgaz should be strenghtened.
The government plans to reorganize the country’s energy production by creating two national power holdings to include assets of all the state-run energy companies.
